  2. I need to document my experience about this seminar 3 years back(2007).I was a postgraduate student at that time and we discussed my PG thesis topic in the seminar which had a good impact over my approach to the thesis.
As a suggestion to the organizers, It would be great if we have a session on how to make use of analysis softwares particularly Opensource softwares in the research.

  3. Hi
I had the privilege to attend the seminar. It was very informative and lively.I think every person doing research or pg thesis should attend such seminars. I thank the organisers for making it so useful.i think i missed the initial part of how to obtain the materials and methods and how to calculate the sample size. It was really beneficial to me as a pg student in internal medicine and doing thesis in diabetes and i hope i get a chance next time also

  8. I am a PhD scholar from Manipal University and have chosen to specialize in promoting physical activity for prevention and control of chronic diseases. I got an opportunity to present part of my research at the International NCD research meet in Manipal (Feb 2013). I am glad to share with you that my presentation was adjudged as the best oral presentation by eminent researchers. This, to me, is a small but significant achievement in my short research career. I am writing to share with you the impact of the training I received in MDRF in this achievement.

After serving as a rehab clinician for over a decade, I decided to pursue research in NCD prevention and control and enrolled for PhD at Manipal University in December 2010. With my background in rehab, I realized the challenges am going to face in understanding research methods in NCD prevention and control.

That’s when I had the privilege of attending the intensive interactive training program and seminar on NCD in Feb 2011. I came to this program with many questions on research designs in epidemiology, sample size calculations and the like. The program was so designed that it encouraged young researchers to present their research ideas. This presentation was followed by critical discussion with participants and feedback from senior research experts. This discussion in itself cleared a lot of doubts that I had. In addition to the presentations by young researchers from varied background, the program also had lectures by senior researchers on various aspects of research, right from design to data management & from grant application to writing for publication. The senior researchers were friendly and easy to interact with. This interaction helped in reinforcing concepts that we just learnt during the presentations and lectures. In addition to the scientific content of the program, the concept of exercise breaks and healthy food counters showed us how healthy lifestyle can be incorporated into our daily routine.

I came back with greater confidence in planning and executing research. To me, the main take home message from the training program was the importance that ought to be given to methodological quality, validity/reliability of measurements and data management at the planning stage of research.
After attending the training program, with support from my teachers in Manipal, I was able to plan my PhD protocol, submit a grant proposal to ICMR and start my research. I came back to the training program in Feb 2012 and presented my research protocol. I could clearly see the difference in my abilities between Feb 2011 and Feb 2012. I was able to participate more in the discussions, critically review other research protocols and solve research questions more effectively. The high point of my protocol presentation was the clarity I had in sample size estimation and data management plan. When I presented part of my research in the NCD research meet in Manipal, I had made specific emphasis to the steps that I took in ensuring reliability and validity of my measurements. This I feel could have helped my presentation being judged as the best oral presentation.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank your team, Dr. Dale Williams, Dr. Cora Lewis and the team in Manipal for their inputs in shaping my research career and NIH Fogarty Training grant for supporting this training program. I realise the burden of NCD in our country and the importance of such training programs in capacity building to tackle the growing burden of the diseases. I hope to contribute to this national challenge in an effective manner.

    Thanks and regards

    Sundar Kumar
